When expecting your first baby the list of baby items you need can easily spiral out of control. And for first time parents the choices can seem overwhelming! So many mums and dads are talked into buying the latest gadgets at great expense only to find that they never use them. A great place to start is to ask family and friends about what they've got the most use out of and what they would recommend.
To help you get the best "bang for your buck" here are some key points to consider when purchasing the top five big ticket items.
Baby Bassinets
Pram: Pick a brand that's lightweight and easy to fold down. Also think about how much space it will take up when placed in the boot of your car. I made the mistake of purchasing a three wheel buggy that was fantastic for getting around but unfortunately it was so heavy I could hardly lift it in and out of the boot of my car! Also it took up so much space that I could hardly fit anything else in the boot with it.
There are many prams that can convert from a lying down position to an upright stroller which is a great saving. Also consider if your pram comes with a fitting for another child as this will come in handy for when baby number two comes along!
Baby Car Seat: You'll need a rear facing capsule for your newborn baby. Depending on the law for your state or country your baby will stay in this capsule for around six months before graduating to a forward facing booster seat. In Australia check with you local public hospital or ambulance service, as they often hire out baby capsules for as little as and they can fit the capsule for you as well.
Cot / Crib: You can use a bassinet or baby hammock when they are little which can save space if you are keeping baby in your bedroom to start off. Or if you prefer you can put your baby straight into a cot or crib. If you're worried about your little baby in a great big cot you might consider using a Safe-T-Sleep wrap, these allow you to keep your baby in a safe sleep position.
Baby Carrier: A baby sling or carrier can be one of the handiest items for your new baby. They keep your newborn comforted and close to you while keeping your hands free! A fabric sling starts form around - while a baby front or backpack can cost anywhere up to 0.
Change Table: Although you can use the bed or floor to change your baby, remember that you'll be changing them every few hours, so to save your back it is worth while investing in a baby change table. Make sure that the change table has a safety harness to avoid falls. Most come with storage shelves or draws and you can even get one's with a baby bath built in under the change top, very handy! A basic model can cost around .
Remember that babies grow very quickly and you'll only use some things for a short period of time. You can save yourself a lot of money by asking other parents what they got the most use out of. And often your friends will only be too happy to pass on their pre-loved prams, change tables or other baby items that their kids have out grown.
