How to Bathe Your Newborn Baby?

You might be a little bit worried about giving the first bath to your baby. You must wonder what is the best and the safest way to wash your little one. As per the American Academy of Pediatric, as long as the umbilical cord is still attached (about 2 weeks or so), it is suggested that you should only use a wet sponge to wash your little one. You can use a mild soap as well. Make sure that the room is warm, you can wash your baby on a changing table, a bed or the floor. Always keep a hand on your baby to make sure he will not fall. Prepare the bathing time by having a basin with clean warm water nearby and 2 washcloths (one for the clear water and the other one for the soap). At few weeks old always keep your baby warm by wrapping him in a nice soft towel and expose one at the time the part of the body you want to clean. Be careful, if you use some soap, around the eyes and mouth areas.

The areas where you should make sure that you clean it properly is the diaper area- as you can imagine- and the surroundings. Clean this area properly after changing the diaper. Other areas is the face, the mouth and anywhere where the skin folds. Where do the skin folds? Well at the arm-pit, groin, behind the ears, the neck per example. You should clean theses areas regularly with a wet sponge or a washcloth. By doing this every day you will need to bath your baby only few times a week (2 or 3 times not more).

Washing your newborn frequently can dry their delicate skin. Make sure that you dry your baby properly with a towel. You can apply a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic baby lotion that will help prevent dry skin. Once the umbilical area is healed, you can place your baby directly in the water. The first times the bath should be gentle and brief. If your baby cries or reacts when bathing then simply go back to the sponge for a while and give it another try, you will see if your baby enjoys it more.

It is also suggested when your child is so young to use a bassinet or the sink not the bathtub. You can fill the basin with 2 inches of warm water. It is very important to check the temperature of the water on your wrist or elbow, it should be warm not hot.

Make sure that all you need for the bath time, from soap to washcloth to fresh diapers, is at hand and again that the temperature of the room is warm. When giving a bath also have on hand a cup that you will use to nicely rinse your baby. If for some reason you forgot something or the phone rings, never, never, never leave your baby, you must take your child with you, so always keep a dry towel nearby just in case.

Babies react to water in different ways, if your child enjoys it let your baby splash and have fun. The more he is having fun, less he will be afraid of the water. Bathing should be a soothing experience. At a young age, toys are not so important. Your baby will be stimulated by the water and the washing. When your baby is older, you can then give him some waterproofs toys to play.

Another useful idea is to use a baby towels with a built-in hoods, it keep your baby warm from head to toe. It is also a good idea to keep an extra towel for yourself. You never know, your baby might enjoy the bathing time and splash water all over. Keep in mind that the bath is preparing your baby to sleep so make it joyful but relaxing.

It's really when your little one grow older and he starts crawling all over, plays with his food or outside, that you really will need to give a full body wash more often. But, even if you are tired of your day, try to enjoy that time with your baby. Have fun and watch your little one all the things he will discover.
