What is SIDS?
It refers to sudden infant death syndrome and its defined popularly as sudden death of an infant without any medical reasons even after a postmortem is done and the case is thoroughly investigated. It is also known as crib death.

As a mother I cant even imagine anything worse than a caring and devoted mother trying her best to take care of her baby and when he is peacefully sleeping only to realize the baby is dead. No mother will ever be able to let go of her sense of guilt, no matter how misplaced it is, she will keep wondering what did she do wrong? what she could have done to prevent it? Over the last decade SIDS incidence has declined in many countries especially in the united states where recommendations about room ventilation, baby clothing, baby sleeping environment especially his bassinet bedding and his sleeping position have been closely observed. Still there are many theories about each and every factor that it can get really confusing and overwhelming so I chose the information with the most consensus and which actually worked in reducing the SIDS incidence. One of the most important factors is co-sleeping where the infant share the mother bed and its one of the worse risks you can take as a mother.
I researched many types of bassinet bedding and different qualities. First make sure you choose the type of bassinet that suits your budget and lifestyle without compromising on any safety measures. Describing these will need more elaborate space and time so in a glance keep the following tips in mind:
1- The weight the bassinet can take.
2- Check the base of the bassinet, you need it to be sturdy.
3- If your choice is a bassinet basket also known as moses baskets then make sure that there is no rough edges or dry reed protruding that can cause injury and ensure that its well padded without any loose folds.
4- If your bassinet is on a stand make sure its stable before you keep the baby.
5- Never ever carry the bassinet with the baby in it by the handles only, no matter how sturdy they look. Always place one hand at the base of the bassinet while carrying your baby in it.
6- Last but not least is choosing the right bassinet bedding which basically is the mattress. There are many choices available of differing qualities and it depends on your bassinet shape. Make sure it is an exact fit for your bassinet size with no distance between the mattress and the bassinet surface. You can choose to go for natural organic mattress which is a very wise investment.
The second most important factor after choosing the right bassinet bedding in which your baby will sleep is how he sleeps. There are many theories in this regards as to the prone position or the supine as each one of them has pros and cons. The current recommendation is flat on the back while some babies find it difficult to sleep in this position. So if your baby insists on sleeping on his tummy, make sure there are no folds near his head, no stuffed toys or pillows and the room is well ventilated and if u can use a fan that is also important. Still try to have your baby sleep on his back to avoid senseless worry.
