Are Crib Bumper Pads Safe For Your Baby

Crib bumper pads are a very common part of a baby bedding set and parents often use bumper pads thinking they are increasing the safety of their child's crib. However, many groups are now recommending that parents skip the crib bumper, saying the need for them has passed, and that they may in fact be causing a safety risk for your baby.

Baby Bassinets

Why Do We Use Crib Bumper Pads?

Baby Bassinets

Crib bumper pads became popular of crib bedding sets in older-style cribs where the slats were far enough apart that a baby's head could become trapped between the slats, posing a suffocation risk. Today, all cribs sold in the United States and Canada are required to have slats close enough together that it's nearly impossible for an infant's head to fit through.

So why do we still use the crib bumper pads?

For some parents, the reason may be as simple as liking the way the bumper pad looks as part of the nursery decor. The matched crib bedding sets in stores are often cute and the package deal makes for a nice coordinated nursery. Other parents are worried about their child's arms and legs sticking through the crib sides. Health Canada reports that serious injury is not likely when a child puts his or her arms and legs through the crib slats. The baby will either remove their arm or leg from the slats if possible, or make enough noise to alert a parent for help.

Which Groups Have Recommended Against Bumper Pads?

Some major children's safety organizations have recently suggested that parents and child care providers should remove crib bumper pads from crib bedding sets. The groups include: American Academy of Pediatrics, Health Canada, National Center for Health and Safety in Child Care, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the First Candle/National SIDS Alliance.

Why Do These Groups Recommend Against Crib Bumper Pads?

One reason child safety organizations recommend against baby bedding with crib bumpers is that they pose a risk of suffocation. Just like a pillow or thick blanket, crib bumper pads can restrict a babys' breathing if the bumper is up next to the baby's nose or mouth. Re-breathing of air is another concern with crib bumper pads. The bumper reduces the flow of fresh air around baby during sleep. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that some infants, when they are overheated or lack sufficient oxygen during sleep, are unable to arouse themselves enough to prevent hypoxia and death. The AAP states that re-breathing of air may in fact be a contributing factor to SIDS.

As parents, we need to make well educated decisions for our babys' safety. Although there is much controversy over using baby bedding that includes crib bumper pads, the risk is very low. As a parent myself, I have confidently used crib bumper pads with both my children and have found that they provide a feeling of security. The bumper pads allow your baby to feel safe within their own space which in turn allows for better sleep.

Baby Shower Gift Ideas - Baby Furniture

For new parents, having a baby is one of God's graces for them. A great preparation is a must to successfully welcome the newborn child's arrival. The shower party should be done according to the plan - from the food, guests and gifts. Setting up cool baby furniture and accessories in the nursery room are great also to show your little darling how he/she is loved.

Baby Bassinets

As to the baby furniture, there are different kinds to choose from. However, choosing the right one for the baby is the main challenge. To find these items, lots of specialty stores made available their top of the line furniture products. The price of each furniture varies with their materials, styles and designs. Some of them can be very expensive but has a better quality compared to cheaper counterparts. Aside from local retailer stores, online stores offer also these baby items. Today, shopping online is a popular option for more convenient purchasing. Aside from that, a wide variety of items selection are available. You can also find cheap items that can make an affordable option for your tight budget.

Baby Bassinets

As with baby furnitures, one of the most important items that you may give is a baby crib. This type of furniture is one of the most important necessities for babies. This item is typically used as a bed for babies. Placing the baby on the crib is a safe idea compared with depending his safety on a bassinet.

Cribs are designed to restrict the baby to the bed. The sides are typically higher for babies to climb with no footholds. The idea behind this design is to safely leave babies behind while their parents are doing some things. And to further improve security and reliability of the confinement, a fabric or solid top may be added to the crib.

Another important furniture is the changing table. This kind of furniture comes with a small raised platform and designed for more convenient dressing of the baby. There are different kinds of changing tables that feature great add-ons as well. These furniture can make a very useful and functional gift for babies. This is not a surprise why most moms appreciate such a gift idea like changing tables.

However, before buying these items, check and look carefully or shake it to see if it's wobbly, otherwise it is unsafe for the baby. For changing tables, if it seems trickery in the store, then it won't get any better once you have it at home. Antique stores can be a great source of beautiful changing tables that still have lots of life in them. Just be careful that there are no exposed nails and other structural problems before using the antique changing table.

Other furniture that can be added on your list are mirrors, high chairs and stool, toy boxes and the like. You may also consider decorations to further enhance the overall look of the baby's nursery room. Decors like frames are best to show some glimpse of the baby. There are also furniture and decors that have cool special effects, you may consider personalized and themed items like personalized flip stools and nursery frame sets. Other personalized gifts such as baby accessories can also make a great gift option to welcome the baby.

A Memorable Baby Shower With Diaper Cakes

Not all parties and celebrations are as memorable as usually thought. Some celebrations are really dull. Take for example baby showers where gifts and cakes are given, silly games played and it ends. Why not make a baby shower party memorable and practical in fact instead of taking it as a usual party only?

Baby Bassinets

The conventional style of baby shower can be improved if some new baby gifts especially a diaper cake is given to the new parents. In this pack, three or four layers of diapers are so packed that it seems some decorative item. This pretty packing hence is the center piece of the all celebration.

Baby Bassinets

The diaper cakes have different size and designs. This provides a large variety of diapers to the parents. A four layer cake usually is made of about 150 diapers. The number of diapers the parents get is large hence. The cake is presented at the last part of the party but manufacturers make sure the packing and decoration rally shines out.

The diaper cake does not have only the diapers in it. The complementary items with it are shining toys, soft blankets, wrapping sheets, clothes for the baby and many other baby items the parent's will need in future.

Just like the color of the baby clothes and toys matter when buying one for the baby, so does the cake color. They can make the parents merry and look pretty in the party. Therefore when you decide to get a diaper cake for the shower, make sure it is according the personality of the parents

Usually diapers of blue and pink packing are used as they look very nice. However, sticking to this traditional theme can be avoided. They are available in different themes and you better go for unique ones. Some of the popular diaper cakes are animal themes like fish, monkey, birds e.g. other famous themes include flower and sports.

Diaper cakes make the baby shower a practical event. They are most suitable gift for such party and are the centerpiece. They make the party lively and harmonize with other decorative items in the room. Also they are beneficial for parents

When you get diaper cake form the visitors of the shower party, you not only get number of diapers but also many other baby items.

New Baby Essentials - Review of Must-Have Baby Items For Parents

Shopping for a new baby is so much fun. Preparing for a baby's arrival is part of the nesting period. There are so many baby products on the market, it can be confusing for parents to know what they really do need and what they don't. Here are some things that you will want to have on hand as you prepare to greet your baby.

Baby Bassinets

Clothes - Of course, your new baby will need clothing. Don't buy too many newborn outfits. While newborns do go through a lot of clothing, they also outgrow it quickly. Consignment stores and thrift shops are often full of baby clothes in good condition, so you can really save money by looking for gently used baby clothes.

Baby Bassinets

Baby Carrier - One of the items I used most during my daughter's early months was a good quality baby carrier. Look for one that provides proper support for you and your baby. Many popular baby carriers are hard on your back and don't provide good support for your baby's growing spine. Wrap style carriers and ring slings are easy to get your baby in and out of, so they are easy to use. Your baby will be happiest and safest with you - and you'll save a lot of money on baby gadgets designed to fool a baby into thinking they are with an adult.

Diapers - You'll need roughly 7,000 disposable diapers over the next 2 1/2 years - or about 24-36 cloth diapers. Cloth diapers have come a long way in recent years, so don't assume that they will be difficult to use. Modern diapers are easy to clean and pins are no longer required. Today's cloth diapers are simple, leak-proof and easy to fasten with snaps or Velcro.

Blankets - Your baby will most likely sleep more soundly if they are swaddled. Swaddling is simply wrapping your baby snuggly in a soft blanket. By holding them snuggly, the blanket will help to soothe your baby. Be sure to read or watch tutorials on how to swaddle correctly. Your baby should be snug, but not tightly wrapped. Always be sure that baby's face is clear. Loose blankets should never be put in the crib or near baby's face. They can cause baby to have trouble breathing.

Car Seat - Get the best car seat you can afford. Be sure to read safety ratings and learn how to install the car seat correctly. Most parents install car seats incorrectly - and endanger their babies by doing so. You can save money by using a convertible car seat and a baby carrier instead of investing in a car seat-stroller combination. We didn't even use a stroller until my daughter was 6 months old. She rode in a car seat that will fit from 5-80 pounds (so we only need to buy one car seat!). When we arrived at our destination, we put her in a baby carrier where she was close to us, safe, away from germs, and happy! Both our hands were free, and we did not have to ruin our backs carrying a heavy car seat around.

Crib - Your baby will need a place to sleep. You can choose to learn about safe cosleeping so you won't need to spend money on a bassinet. If you plan to use a crib, your baby can sleep safely in the crib from the beginning. Don't waste money on a crib bumper. Safety agencies in both the US and Canada recommend against using a crib bumper. Choose a well-made crib that has stationary sides. Drop side cribs are dangerous and have caused many deaths.

Old Fashion Carriages - Make Way For Modern Baby Strollers

There's baby gear for everything, and that certainly includes strollers! When it comes to baby accessories, strollers are certainly available in a very wide selection of shapes, size, features and benefits. When narrowing down your ideal baby stroller, first consider the kind of baby transportation you need. Maybe you have in mind something to transport baby - and all that equipment - along the lines of a traditional stroller. You might even find that having more than one stroller is a smart move.

Baby Bassinets

We'll examine some basic strollers to consider. As previously alluded to, there really isn't any limit on the numerous features - and price tags - for baby strollers on the market today!

Baby Bassinets

Seat-Carrier Frame Strollers

These models are made for newborns who can't sit up on their own yet. For that reason, this sort of stroller is not equipped with an adjustable seat. In fact, there isn't a seat! It lays flat and designed to carry a newborn car seat for any walk-abouts you wish to do. No need waking up the baby either. Simply transport the car seat directly to the stroller and off you go!

Combo Strollers

"Combos" - are a carriage and stroller in one. This kind of design can be used with a brand new infant. They are designed to carry your baby laying flat in either a car seat or bassinet.

In theory, you'll be able to use this sort of stroller from birth up through the toddler years. (It supports around 40 pounds). And when the baby gets older, you can use the adjustable seat attachment for the correct sitting setup. These strollers can get rather expensive though, priced all the way to 0. But for this high dollar you get plenty of options such as additional storage space for extra baby gear and large canopies for protection from the sun and rain.

Travel System Strollers

For mobility, these units are awesome! Babies who aren't capable of sitting up can be moved right in their car seat, which securely fastens right to the stroller. When it's time to head back to the car, simply raise the seat off the stroller and snap it into the car's safety belt system. Very convenient!

Old Fashioned Baby Buggies

These 'old school' models of strollers are still seen today. They usually have spoked-wheels and lots of room for baby and all that baby gear. Carriages are perfect for newborns and a few models have removable 'carrying cots'.

The not-so-good news is that carriages are pretty big, cumbersome and not overly maneuverable. They're particularly awkward to use in crowed city environments where you will encounter quite a few obstacles to contend with. Still, if 'old fashion' appeals to you, these strollers are big and roomy and provide a touch nostalgia for the past.

Traditional Baby Strollers

Traditional strollers are in the 'everything including the kitchen sink' class. Traditional strollers vary from lightweight designs all the way to massive, industrial-strength models.

The 'ironman' models are made with deep compartments and plenty of room. They have designed-in shock absorbers on all 4 wheels and are manufactured to withstand plenty of punishment. But they're bulky. Yes, they are firm and stable, but rather massive.

There are several features found in traditional strollers like snack trays, lots of baby gear storage, one-handed folding capabilities, and adjustable seating. Some are actually all-in-one models and might be designed to work with bassinets and car seats. But they do have a tendency to be a bit on the heavy side so traveling with them is more of a task.

Umbrella Strollers

Umbrella strollers are aptly named due to their handles that resemble those on an umbrella. These strollers are extraordinarily lightweight and very convenient for traveling. Most umbrella strollers fold easily but the ride tends to be a bit rough (depending on the terrain). Umbrellas make a great spare stroller and their priced very reasonably.

All-Terrain Strollers

While on the topic of terrain, we like to take our babies EVERYWHERE we tend to go! Including off road. This can be where an all-terrain stroller earns its keep.

These strollers are heavy-duty and can take the punishment due to oversized bicycle-like tires. And yes, they are inflatable! And these strollers are equipped with 3 of them. Bicycle-like tires give the baby a gentler ride. Plus they're capable of handling heavier loads which makes them ideal for 'larger' babies and also when you're transporting extra baby gear.

Jogging strollers

Since we include our babies in many of our activities, we need a stroller that is as mobile as we are. You can find strollers especially made for active parents who wish to include their little ones with them on their runs.

A stroller designed for jogging is a three-wheeled apparatus with oversized, air-filled tires. These strollers have extra long handles which positions the stroller a little more out in front of the jogger so running legs have ample space to move and not be hindered by the stroller frame.

Safety features on this kind of stroller come with a front brake and a wrist strap so everything stays in control at all times. This being extremely important. Their rugged design allows the stroller to go off the beaten path like an all-terrain stroller.

There are a number of baby stroller features to work with your active lifestyle. From traditional buggies, all-in-one travel units, lightweight umbrella strollers and extra hardy strollers for active families, you're sure to find the perfect baby stroller to complement your individual preference and baby transportation needs.

Mommy - Baby Bonding - Strategies, Tips and Myths

The Myth of Instantaneous Bonding

Baby Bassinets

Many moms expect to feel bonded with their new baby immediately, as if the the process of childbirth creates instantaneous connection and love. Yet feeling connected to, and in love with, your baby may not happen this fast. Bonding is often a gradual process which begins during pregnancy (or even conception) and continues long after your baby is born.

Baby Bassinets

Let Go of the Worry

New mothers have enough to worry about without adding bonding to their list:

- "Is it happening?" - "Am I connecting enough?" - "Am I doing this right?"

are questions that cause moms unnecessary anxiety and duress. Step out of your worry and realize that your physical and mental state affects how you bond with, and feel about, your child. Focus attention on yourself -- on what you need to feel physically and emotionally well -- to be more present for, and available to, your baby.

Ensuring Your Optimal Frame of Mind

BEFORE YOUR BABY ARRIVES:

Create a birth plan and send it to the head nurse at the hospital in which you will deliver. List all the things that you require to feel comfortable and at ease during your delivery and after your baby is born, e.g.:

o I want to be with my baby at all times - even during bathing and tests.
o I am breastfeeding, so please do not offer my baby a bottle or pacifier.
o I do not mind a pacifier, but please consult with me first.
o I am not breastfeeding, so formula is fine.
o Please do not bathe my baby after delivery. o I would like to nurse my baby as soon as she is born (if medically feasible).
IN THE HOSPITAL:

o Hold your baby right after s/he is born, unless medical complications arise.
o Breastfeed, if you are comfortable with that choice.
o Hold your newborn skin-to-skin.
o Sleep in the same room as your child (if you feel like it).
o Hold your baby as much as you desire.
WHEN YOU GET HOME:

Leaving the hospital and caring for your newborn at home can be scary, stressful and exhausting. Some basic pointers can ease this transition and make bonding joyful and easier for you and your child.

- Take Time to Adjust:

For two weeks (at least) after your baby is born, have a nesting-in period in which all commitments, outside of taking care of yourself and your child, are off (that includes cleaning, cooking, entertaining, etc.). If you have a partner, s/he should join you during the "nesting-in" period, to the extent that his/her schedule allows.

Moms need time to adjust, at their own speed and with ample support, both to their new role and to their new baby.

- Give Yourself Love, Comfort and Care:

Before you give birth (or after you read this ezine) create a support network to turn to once your baby is born: whether it is a doula, a trusted friend, a babysitter, or a loved and supportive relative, have someone on call who can relieve you from cooking, cleaning, and baby-care. Take time to rest, pamper yourself, chat with supportive friends, take stock, recharge and breathe.

Tell your support network ahead of time that you will be needing their services beyond the initial two weeks of your baby's life.

- Leave Your Expectations Behind and Live in the Fullness of Every Moment:

Rid yourself of the idea that you are supposed to be blissfully happy all of the time after your baby arrives. Conflicted feelings about motherhood and about new babies are common. Feeling a range of emotions -- joyful, overwhelmed, frustrated, excited, disappointed, elated, sad, in love, etc. -- is normal and to be expected.

Remember: As a new mom, you will be experiencing hormonal fluctuations. If you are feeling depressed for more than 2 weeks postpartum (baby-blues usually strike within the first week postpartum and subside within 2-3 weeks), seek professional help.

Live in the moment and take relish in all the feelings that come up during your baby's first months of life.

- Trust Your Instinct:

Make sure all well wishers leave their advice at the door and trust what you know:

o If your baby is crying, feel free to pick him or her up as often as feels right.
o If you think your baby is hungry, feed her even if she ate only an hour before.
o Wear your baby around the house in a sling or front carrier if that's what she likes (don't listen to the nay sayer who warns that you will "spoil" your child).
o Talk to your baby as much as you feel the urge, even if you feel silly.
o Breastfeed or bottle feed depending on what feels right for you.
o Determine where you are most comfortable with your baby sleeping (in a crib, co-sleeper, your bed, a bassinet, etc.).
Most of all, take time to get to know your baby. The more time you spend with your child -- watching reactions and tending to needs -- the more in sync and bonded you will be.
